Fishing & Boating

Iron Canyon Reservoir contains trout which can be caught from the readily accessible shoreline or by boat. Stocking updates for Iron Canyon Reservoir can be obtained from the Department of Fish and Game's website at http://www.dfg.ca.gov/fishplant/index.htmlll. The reservoir levels change due to fluctuating power needs and weather, and speedboats and water-skiing are not permitted. Larger boats with deep draft are not recommended due to shallow lake levels, but owners of smaller, low-speed boats find Iron Canyon Reservoir ideal.

Camping & Picnicking

Iron Canyon Reservoir has two established campgrounds, but camping is also permitted outside the campgrounds. Deadlun Campground, operated by the U.S. Forest Service, has 30 campsites with a maximum length for RVs of 24 feet. The campground, which has no fee, is first-come first-served, and has vault toilets but no piped water. More information can be obtained from the Shasta Lake Information Center at (530) 275-1889. Hawkins Landing Campground has a fee and is owned by PG & E. The campground has ten campsites and a boat ramp. For more information about the PG & E campground, call (916) 386-5164.

Hiking & Backcountry Driving

Primitive, unimproved trails skirt the lake and provide fishing and lake access. The Pacific Crest Trail follows the ridge of the north rim of the Iron Canyon Basin.

Primitive roads and jeep trails radiate from Iron Canyon Reservoir. Many are suited only for high clearance and/or four-wheel drive vehicles and offer numerous opportunities for challenging extended loop trips. Off-road driving is permitted, but visitors must respect the rights of private property owners.
